In an absolutely horrifying scene that sounds like something out of an action movie, a gunman has opened fire from the top of one of Mexico’s most famous ancient pyramids, leaving one tourist dead and several others wounded.
The chaotic nightmare unfolded on Monday at the iconic Teotihuacán archaeological site just outside of Mexico City. Terrifying images instantly started circulating across Mexican media, showing terrified visitors crouching for their lives at the base of the massive Pyramid of the Moon. High above them, a man in a checked shirt reportedly launched a spray of bullets directly into the crowd of tourists.
Tragically, authorities have confirmed that a Canadian tourist was fatally wounded in the barrage, while at least six other people were left injured. The terrifying ordeal came to an abrupt end when the unnamed shooter reportedly turned the gun on himself, dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound before authorities could take him down.
Right now, police are completely in the dark regarding the shooter's identity or what kind of sick motive drove him to turn a premier Mesoamerican historical site into a deadly firing squad.
The timing of this wild and tragic incident could not be worse for the country. Mexico is currently gearing up to host this summer's massive World Cup soccer extravaganza, and this high-profile tourist attack is raising some very serious red flags. Despite President Claudia Sheinbaum repeatedly promising the world that a rock-solid security plan is in place for the upcoming games, this brazen daylight shooting proves just how quickly things can spiral out of control.
President Sheinbaum took to X (formerly Twitter) to address the absolute tragedy, stating, “What happened today in Teotihuacán pains us deeply. I express my deepest sympathy to those affected and their families.”
While authorities have since locked down the sprawling archaeological zone and declared it back under control, the horrifying reality that a sniper-style attack just happened at one of Mexico's most visited tourist attractions is going to send massive shockwaves through the travel and sports worlds.
