Melbourne High-Speed Chase Ends in Dramatic Arrest After Multi-Suburb Pursuit
A 36-year-old man is facing a long list of charges following a dramatic high-speed police chase across Melbourne’s suburbs on Friday, July 11.
Victoria Police allege the man stole a van on St Kilda Road around 5:40am, sparking a wild pursuit captured live by news helicopters. The chase weaved through multiple suburbs, including Footscray, Melbourne CBD, Port Melbourne, Spotswood, Carnegie, Sunshine, Dandenong, and Point Cook.
According to police, the van was allegedly driven dangerously, colliding with several parked and moving vehicles while speeding erratically through busy streets.
Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. The pursuit ended just after 1:00pm when the van crashed into a street sign at the intersection of Dunnings Road and Palmers Road in Point Cook.
Dramatic footage of the arrest shows the man attempting to escape by climbing out of the van’s window as it continued to roll forward. He stepped directly into the path of a pursuing police vehicle, which struck him and sent him airborne. Officers quickly swarmed the scene, restraining the man as he tried to stand.
Victoria Police have confirmed the man is now facing multiple charges relating to theft, dangerous driving, evading police, and traffic offences.
