Terror as Passengers Dangle From Spinning Ride After Mechanical Failure

A large rotating observation tower at a Brazilian amusement park stopped working while carrying passengers 60 meters above ground. The attraction, called the Super Gyro Tower, broke down on a Friday afternoon in Balneario Camboriu, a coastal city in Brazil.

The ride had opened just three months before the incident occurred. It can hold up to 50 people during each trip and typically runs about 300 times per day. The tower lifts passengers nearly 300 meters above sea level and rotates to give them views of the surrounding area.

The Malfunction

The tower stopped spinning and started to lower slowly before it jerked and became stuck in place. Passengers remained trapped in the cabin high above the park while rescue teams prepared their equipment. Tourists were rappelled to safety using ropes and harnesses after the ride failed.

One passenger described waiting for more than two hours before being brought down. People inside the cabin received little information about what was happening during the early stages of the evacuation.

The Rescue Operation

Emergency crews attached ropes and safety equipment to the structure. They lowered approximately 40 people one at a time down the maintenance access route on the tower's side. Rescue workers later brought in a ladder truck to speed up the process of getting remaining passengers to the ground.

The ride includes both tourists and park employees during each trip. All of these individuals needed to be evacuated through the emergency exit system.

The Cause

Park staff explained that a power outage triggered an automatic safety lock system. This safety feature caused the ride to freeze in position rather than continue operating without full power. The park confirmed that trained safety teams helped with the evacuation and stated the attraction would close for maintenance and inspection before reopening to guests.
